TRUIST · LEGACY AND CURRENT LAYOUTS

truist bank statement example

Truist was formed from the merger of BB&T and SunTrust, and customers often hold a history that spans both legacy systems. Comparing statements across that transition is the specific skill this page covers, alongside the ordinary deposit-account checks. This truist bank statement example follows one invented checking account across the merger: the same deposits and debits appear in the current layout below, with notes on how the legacy layout labelled them.

A Truist statement history that crosses a system change

If your Truist relationship predates the merger, older documents in your archive may have been issued under a legacy brand and a different document design. Section names, description formats and even account numbering can differ between the old and new files. For a single month that is invisible; for a multi-year reconstruction it means two different parsing problems in one folder.

Sort your statements by period before converting anything and look at one from each era. If the layouts differ, convert them in two passes and reconcile each pass separately rather than feeding the whole folder through at once and trying to explain the result.

Confirm the product and period on every Truist statement

Truist issues documents for checking, savings, credit cards and lending products. A deposit statement reconciles opening balance plus credits minus debits to a closing balance; a card statement follows a billing period with payments, purchases, interest and a minimum due; a loan statement reports principal and interest rather than spendable balance. Check the header before applying any arithmetic.

Where you hold several products, keep the product name with each extracted row. A positive amount means something different on each document type, and a combined sheet without that column is ambiguous.

Separate direct deposits, card spending, checks and charges

Within a deposit statement, direct deposits arrive on a predictable schedule, card purchases post a day or more after authorisation, checks clear when presented and service charges appear on cycle dates. Classifying these four groups early makes the rest of the review straightforward, because each has a different reason for falling where it does in the period.

Pending card authorisations are not statement items. A hold that appeared in the app during the cycle but had not posted by the closing date belongs to the next statement.

Close the balance chain before analysing anything

Add the period's credits to the opening balance, subtract the debits, and compare the result against the printed closing figure. Only when that agrees should you start categorising spending or building summaries. Analysis performed on an extraction that does not reconcile simply distributes the error across your categories.

A chain that fails to close by a round amount often points to a missing page; one that fails by a small odd amount usually points to a fee or a reversal captured on only one side.

Downloading the official Truist statement

Fetch each period from your own Truist banking, oldest first if you are rebuilding a history. Historical statements from before the merger may sit under a different retrieval path or require a request, so allow time if you are building a long history for a lender or an accountant.

Keep the PDFs. A spreadsheet built from them is a working copy; the issued statement is the document a third party will accept.

Truist statement extraction settings that matter

Dates as dates, amounts as numbers, descriptions as text in their own column, and check or reference numbers as text so leading zeros survive. If you are merging legacy and current statements, add a column recording which layout each row came from; it makes any later anomaly traceable.

Verify the extracted row count and several large amounts against each PDF before using the combined table.

Two statement eras behind this truist bank statement example

Two of these rows exist because of the merger; the rest are ordinary deposit-account fields.

FieldWhy it matters here
Issuing brand and layout eraLegacy or current; affects how the file parses
Product typeDeposit, card or lending; each reconciles differently
Statement periodScope for this document's arithmetic
Opening balanceStarting figure for a deposit account
Direct deposits and creditsRegular money in
Card, check and electronic debitsMoney out, with different timing behaviour
Closing balance$1,503.79 on the specimen; compare with the next statement's opening

A Truist conversion is reliable when:

  • Legacy-era and current-era statements were converted in separate passes
  • Each row carries the product it came from
  • The balance chain closes before any categorisation is attempted

One layout era versus two: banks without a merger

Banks without a recent merger produce one consistent layout, which is worth seeing for contrast. US consumer guidance on statements is published by Ask CFPB, the US consumer regulator's guidance.

The issued file feeds straight into the Excel converter or the CSV converter; see the extraction guide for the method.

Why do my older Truist statements look different?

Documents issued before the merger of BB&T and SunTrust can follow a different design. Convert the two eras separately rather than in one batch.

Is a pending card hold on the statement?

No. If it had not posted by the closing date it belongs to the next cycle.

Can I combine Truist deposit and card statements in one sheet?

Keep a source column that records product and layout era. A positive card amount means more owed, a positive checking amount means money received, and legacy files may print signs differently.

My balance chain is out by a round number — what does that suggest?

Typically a missing page. A small odd difference more often indicates a fee or reversal captured on one side only.

My older statements use different headings. Are they still valid?

Yes. Statements issued before the conversion keep their original layout. Map the old headings to the new ones once, then reconcile each statement in its own format.
