SBI SAVINGS · UPI, NEFT, IMPS
sbi bank statement example
A State Bank of India statement is a rupee record in which UPI, NEFT, IMPS and cheque activity each carry their own reference format. Those references are the most valuable and most fragile part of the document. This sbi bank statement example follows an invented savings account month in which each narration starts with its rail — UPI, NEFT, IMPS or CHQ — followed by a reference number that should stay as text.

UPI, NEFT, IMPS and cheques describe themselves differently
Indian retail payments move through several rails and each writes itself into the narration differently. A UPI transaction typically carries a virtual payment address and a long transaction reference. NEFT and IMPS transfers carry their own reference numbers and the counterparty bank details. A cheque carries its number. Reading these as one undifferentiated description throws away the structure that makes a later query possible.
Keep the complete narration string in one column exactly as printed. If you want the rail identified separately, derive it into a second column; do not overwrite the original.
Reference numbers must stay text
UPI and NEFT references are long digit strings. A spreadsheet treating them as numbers will display them in scientific notation or drop leading zeros, and once that has happened the reference no longer matches anything the bank or the counterparty holds. This is the single most common way an otherwise good extraction becomes useless.
Set the narration and reference columns to text before import rather than attempting to repair them afterwards.
Passbook, statement and the IFSC
A passbook and a statement record the same account activity in different forms, and organisations differ in which they will accept. The IFSC identifies the branch and appears on the statement header; it is alphanumeric and belongs in a text field alongside the account number.
Where a verification requires a statement rather than a passbook, download the statement for the exact period rather than photographing passbook pages, which have no period boundary of their own.
Debit and credit columns rather than signed amounts
Indian documents conventionally place money out and money in under two distinct headings rather than signing a single figure. The column a figure sits in carries the direction, so a conversion that reads only the numeric values will produce totals with no relationship to the account.
Check during extraction that each row landed in the correct column. A row where both columns are populated, or neither, indicates the parser lost the column boundary.
Closing the balance in rupees
In rupees, the credits and debits between the two balances must account for the difference. Follow the printed per-line balance with a figure of your own and the break between them pinpoints the bad row.
Indian statements often print the balance after every transaction, which makes this the most efficient check available and worth doing before any categorisation.
Getting the SBI account statement online or at a branch
Generate the statement for your account and date range in your own SBI banking. Keep the account number, IFSC and period with the file so the context survives alongside the data.
Retain the PDF. A converted sheet is a working copy; the issued statement is what a lender or employer will accept.
Reference fields in this sbi bank statement example
The reference fields dominate this list because they are what makes an Indian statement queryable afterwards.
| Field | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Account number and IFSC | Both alphanumeric; store as text |
| Statement period | Scope for the arithmetic |
| Opening balance | ₹18,450.75 on the specimen |
| Narration | Carries UPI, NEFT, IMPS or cheque references |
| Debit column | Money out; the column supplies the direction |
| Credit column | Money in |
| Running balance | Printed after each row; ₹63,954.75 at the end of the specimen |
An SBI extraction is sound when:
- Narration and reference columns were set to text before import
- Every row landed in exactly one of the debit and credit columns
- The balance you calculate agrees with the one the statement prints, row for row
Debit and credit columns against a single signed amount
Statements that use a single signed amount column look quite different, which is worth seeing. India's retail payment rails are operated and documented by NPCI, which operates UPI, IMPS and NEFT-adjacent rails.
Once the genuine file is saved, try the Excel converter, the CSV converter, or the extraction guide.
SBI bank statement example: UPI references and narrations
Why did my UPI reference turn into scientific notation?
It was imported as a number. Set the column to text first; reformatting afterwards does not restore the digits.
Is a passbook the same as a statement?
They record the same activity in different forms, and organisations differ in what they accept. A statement has a defined period; passbook pages do not.
What makes an amount a debit rather than a credit?
Its position. Indian statements place the figure under one of two headed columns instead of signing it.
What is the IFSC for?
It identifies the branch. It is alphanumeric and belongs in a text field alongside the account number.
What does the long number in a UPI narration mean?
It is the UPI transaction reference, usually 12 digits, followed by the counterparty's VPA or name. Keep it as text; it is what the bank asks for if you raise a dispute.
