MONZO · APP-EXPORTED STATEMENT
monzo bank statement example
Monzo is an app-first bank, so the statement is exported from the app rather than printed from a branch or a desktop portal. Knowing the difference between that export and the activity feed is the whole of this guide. The monzo bank statement example below is an invented monthly PDF export in which money moved into Pots shows as a transfer, and only settled card payments appear — the coffee still pending at month end does not.
Download an authentic Monzo statement
In the app, tap Home, the three dots beneath your card, then Bank statements; choose the dates and PDF.
The feed is not the statement
What you see when you open Monzo is a live feed: transactions appear as they happen, pending card authorisations sit alongside settled ones, and the balance updates continuously. None of that can be reconciled, because there is no period and no closing figure. The statement is a separate export covering a defined month with an opening and closing balance.
When an organisation asks for a bank statement, the feed screenshot is not what they mean. Export the statement for the month and send that.
Pending and settled are different states
A card authorisation reserves money but has not yet moved it. Until it settles, it reduces your available balance without being a statement transaction. On the statement for the month, only settled transactions appear, which is why the feed and the statement can disagree about a purchase made in the last day or two of the period.
If an amount changed slightly between the feed and the statement, that is settlement: the merchant finalised a different amount from the authorisation, which is common with fuel, hotels and tips.
Pots move money without spending it
Money moved into a Pot has left the main balance but has not left your control. Treating Pot transfers as spending will make your outgoings look far larger than they are, and treating withdrawals from a Pot as income will do the reverse.
Tag Pot movements as internal transfers at extraction time. Both directions need the tag, or your monthly totals will swing by the amount you saved.
Faster Payments, Direct Debits and card spending
Incoming and outgoing transfers settle quickly and carry a reference. Direct Debits recur with amounts that can vary. Card spending posts on settlement. Each behaves differently around the end of the month, which is where almost all apparent discrepancies live.
Reconcile on the dates in the statement export rather than on your recollection of when a payment was made.
Closing the month
With Pot movements netting out, the month's activity must bridge the two balances. If Pot transfers were not tagged, the chain still closes but every category total is wrong, which is a more insidious failure than one that announces itself.
Check the transaction count as well as the totals, since two offsetting errors leave a correct-looking sum.
Exporting from the app
Generate the month inside the Monzo app and export the resulting file. Export the month you need rather than screenshotting, because only the export has the period boundary and the opening and closing balances a reconciliation requires.
Keep the PDF. It is the document that can be verified, and the only form a third party should be given.
Export versus feed in this monzo bank statement example
These rows describe the exported statement, not the feed; the feed has no equivalent of the first or last row.
| Field | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Statement month | The closed period the export covers |
| Opening balance | Starting figure for the month |
| Settled card transactions | Only settled items appear; pending ones do not |
| Faster Payments in and out | With the reference provided by the sender |
| Direct Debits | Recurring, and the payee may change the amount after notice |
| Pot transfers | Internal movement; tag so they are not counted as spending |
| Closing balance | £396.73 on the specimen, after Pot transfers |
A Monzo month reconciles when:
- Pot transfers are tagged as internal in both directions
- Only settled transactions were expected on the statement
- The export, not a feed screenshot, was used for anything sent to a third party
App export versus a branch-printed statement
A traditional bank's statement shows what the app-first model changes about access rather than about content. The UK rails this account uses are documented by Pay.UK, which operates the UK retail payment systems.
Start from the issued PDF, then use the Excel converter, the CSV converter or the extraction guide.
Monzo bank statement example: Pots and pending payments
Why does my feed show a transaction the statement does not?
It was still pending when the month closed. Only settled transactions appear on the statement.
Why did the amount change between the feed and the statement?
Settlement finalised a different amount from the authorisation. Fuel, hotels and tipping commonly do this.
Should Pot transfers count as spending?
No. They move money within your own account. Tag both directions as internal or your monthly totals will be badly distorted.
Can I send a screenshot of my Monzo feed as a statement?
No. It has no period boundary and no opening or closing balance. Export the statement for the month.
Why is a card payment from the 31st missing from my Monzo statement?
It was still pending when the month closed. Statements list settled transactions only, so it will appear in the month it settles.
