Two ways to get Bank of America transactions into Excel
Bank of America offers a direct download for recent activity, while older periods are usually only available as PDF statements. Use the direct export when it covers the dates you need and convert the PDF statement when it does not.
Option 1: Bank of America export to Excel or CSV from Online Banking
For recent transactions, Bank of America Online Banking can download account activity directly. Sign in, open the account, and use the Download link in the activity view. The download dialog lets you choose a transaction period and a file type; the spreadsheet-friendly choices are Microsoft Excel and CSV, alongside Quicken (QFX) and QuickBooks (QBO). The Bank of America CSV export contains posted transactions for the selected range only, and the available date range is shorter than the seven years of statements that can be viewed as PDFs.
If the Bank of America download CSV option covers the dates you need, use it: the values come straight from the bank's ledger and need no OCR or table reconstruction. Open the file in Excel, confirm that dates are recognized as dates, and store the account number column as text so leading zeros are not dropped.
Option 2: Convert the Bank of America PDF statement to Excel
Bank of America statements older than the direct-download window, statements for closed accounts, and statements you received by mail or e-mail are only available as PDF. Then spot-check a few transactions from each section, paying attention to wrapped multi-line descriptions and to check numbers, which should remain text in Excel.
