CIMB MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE

cimb bank statement example

CIMB operates across several Southeast Asian markets, so a CIMB statement has to be read with its country and currency in view. This guide covers that, the DuitNow rail in Malaysia and the usual reconciliation checks. This cimb bank statement example puts an invented Malaysian ringgit account beside a Singapore dollar account, because CIMB serves both markets and each document must be read in its own country and currency.

Country and currency before anything else

A CIMB relationship can span more than one market, and statements from different countries report in different currencies with different payment vocabulary and different account identifier formats. Establish which market issued the document before interpreting a single figure, and record the country and currency with every row you extract.

Amounts from two markets must never be totalled without an explicit conversion decision. That decision is yours and should be recorded, not left to a spreadsheet adding two columns.

Malaysian transfers and the DuitNow rail

On a Malaysian ringgit account, transfers through DuitNow address a registered identifier — mobile number, identification number or business registration — rather than an account number, and carry a sender-supplied reference. Interbank transfers and standing instructions describe themselves differently again.

The reference is normally the only statement of what a transfer was for. Capture it verbatim; a shortened version cannot be matched against anything afterwards.

Separate debit and credit columns

The statement typically prints debits and credits in their own columns rather than as one signed amount. The column carries the direction, which means a parser that reads only the numbers will produce a total unrelated to the account's actual movement.

After extraction, scan for rows that filled both headings or left both blank: those are the ones where the split between the columns was not recognised.

Card spending, fees and the period edge

Card purchases post after authorisation and can therefore cross the period boundary. Service charges and any fee reversals appear as ordinary rows but are worth isolating, since they explain balance movements with no purchase behind them, and a charge with a matching reversal must be captured on both sides or on neither.

A reconciliation short by a small odd amount is far more often a half-captured fee pair than a fault in the main transaction table.

Closing each CIMB account's period

Inside one currency and one period, the activity has to reconcile the two printed balances. Recompute any printed running balance row by row and stop at the first divergence; that single row holds the problem.

Verify how many rows the document holds, because a cancelling pair of mistakes preserves the total and hides the fault.

Obtaining the statement

Name the market as well as the account when you request a CIMB document. Keep the country and currency in the file name so the reading conventions are obvious when you return to it.

The issued PDF is the record; a converted sheet is a working copy for your analysis.

Markets and currencies in this cimb bank statement example

Market and currency lead this list because a CIMB relationship can cross borders without changing the bank's name.

A CIMB dataset is sound when:

  • Country and currency appear on every row of the extract
  • Transfer references were captured verbatim
  • Any service charge and its reversal were taken together

Two CIMB markets against a one-country bank

A single-market bank needs neither the currency column nor the conversion decision. Scheme material for Malaysian payments is published by PayNet, Malaysia's payments network.

From the authentic document, the Excel converter or CSV converter produces the table and the extraction guide the checks.

CIMB bank statement example: IBG and cross-border totals

Can I add my CIMB Malaysia and Singapore balances together?

Only after converting one deliberately at a rate you record. Reconcile the RM account and the S$ account each in its own currency first.

What does a DuitNow entry show as the counterparty?

A registered identifier such as a mobile number, ID number or business registration, with a reference supplied by the sender.

How is a debit distinguished from a credit?

By the column it appears in. The statement uses separate columns rather than a signed amount.

My reconciliation is short by a small amount — where should I look?

Usually a service charge and a matching reversal where only one of the two rows was captured.

My CIMB statement shows an IBG transfer. What is that?

Interbank GIRO, a scheduled transfer to an account at another Malaysian bank. It usually settles later than DuitNow, so expect it on the next business day rather than instantly.
